Criticism for VV

vv-blowup5

An article in Kaalachchuvadu Tamil magazine by Aniruddh(an) Vasudevan criticises Vaettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu for its portrayal of homosexuals. While the movie has been criticised for various aspects from screenplay loop-holes to Kamal’s acting, this is something new.

The article opines that when homosexuals (and other variations) have never really been properly depicted in Tamil movies, the confusing way in which this movie shows them would provide wrong impressions. In closing, Aniruddh feels sad that “Kamal has co-operated in such a violence in the cultural world” and condemns Gautham.

While empathising with such feelings, my opinion is that a maker of any form of art has the right to do it any way he wants. As a writer-director, Gautham has the freedom to say whatever story he wants and however he wants. It’s upto the audience to lap it up or reject it. In any case, I didn’t get a sense of irresponsibility from the movie.
