Kamal’s best movies [Birthday Special]

People around the world may talk about 9/11, 7/7 or 7/11 (11/7). But the 7/11 we all remember is the 7th of November, Kamal’s birthday.

Surpringly, this time, there are many doing similar posts. SathyaPriyan (in Tamil) came up with a list of best movies a while ago. Today, it’s Raju’s turn. But do you want to know what Kamal himself thinks? Here’s a slightly outdated list.

For me, its a tie between 16 vayathanilae and Nayagan. I consider Kamal hassan to be the greatest Indian actor of all time bar none. But one flaw that he has is he brings too much of the real kamal hassan into some of his characters. His films often become a vehicle for his political and atheist views. But in the two films mentioned above, he completely gets into the character, without any trace of the real kamalhassan. both these films are classics. Major credit also goes to Bharthiraja and Mani Rathnam who directed these films.

I agree with your point that Kamal brings a lot of his real self to many of his characters. But think from the point of a film-maker who wants to convey some message. The movie is like a writer’s book or an artist’s painting. That way, he can’t help it and it’s actually fine. Kamal’s performances need to be measured differently when the story / movie is his and when it’s someone else’s.
