I re-visited this film again last week, and it further confirms my impression that this is one of the best Indian films I have seen in years — its pacing, its grip, its visceral impact, and the fine supporting cast (wow, what a Pasupathi performance this is!).

The scene when Kamal discovers his dead grandmother didn’t have that much of an impact on me in earlier viewings, but on this go-round, it was awesome! Ditto with the subsequent sequence at her funeral, and best of all the panchayat scene that degenerates into violence…

Btw, in a Kamal interview posted on this blog he had said that “Virumaandi was 50 percent from my memory of where I come from.” Can someone give me some more biographical information on him? i.e. is he from Madurai originally?

Also, media reports have long said that Coimbatore is a box-office/commercial stronghold of Kamal’s — anyone have any insight as to why Coimbatore in particular?

KAmal is from paramakudi, some 100 kms south of madurai..

regarding the BO strongholds, thalaivar is the KING in chennai, bangalore, kerala, overseas, andhra.. and holds a great base in other centres as well

kamal’s base is only in A centres. It is not much in B & almost nmon existent (now) in C centres. He has a good overseas market though.

Anbe Sivam was a resounding flop here but did well in countries like srilanka.
