Bharathiraja slams Dasavathaaram!

For the past 10 years or so, Bharathiraja has been frustrated by his failures — both his directorial ventures and his attempts to establish his son Manoj as a hero. I feel he has tried to gain publicity by getting involved in politics of the movie world and also giving vent to his frustrations. Also, I guess it has got to do with him ageing. But it was shocking to see that last week, Kamal became his target. Kamal had participated in functions along with Bharathiraja even as recent as June, where both of them displayed fondness and mutual respect for each other.

While his feedback on Dasavathaaram will be appreciated by Kamal, there was no need to launch a scathing attack in public, while also claiming that he had the guts to convey it to Kamal directly. When the movie in question, though a commercial entertainer, stands way above the regular trash dished out by the industry, why single it out? Because it’s fashionable to attack Kamal and Dasavathaaram? He has also criticised Kamal’s writing skills, while forgetting the great scripts that Kamal has come up with in the past.

While Bharathiraja will be forever remembered for providing some wonderful movies with Kamal, he just fell a few notches down in the eyes of Kamal fans, if not the general public.

Dear Bharathiraja, So, you don’t like technology – a pure visual entertainment; you don’t want a clever inclusion of science in movies; you don’t like a true international movie. Sorry, you are not fit for 21st century! But don’t worry, I also enjoy old-gold.

I agree, he is getting old; too bad to see his ugly nose everywhere unnecessarily :-(

  2. Sridhar says:

Well said. Even if BR genuinely feels Dasa don’t have any story and thinks KH is not a good script writer, he could have
discussed this privately with thalaivar. As randramble had pointed out he fell a few notches down. He should be pissed
off with the fact that he and his movies has become obsolete. And vents his anger like this.

I hope his movie Bomalatam/Cinema comes out of the can, so that we can see what kind of movies he is capable of making
    “now”.

  3. randramble says:

Another factor might be Kamal not acceding to Bharathiraja’s wish of acting in one of his proposed projects, Kuttraparambarai

  4. siva says:

PLEASE DON’T DEMONIZE BHARATHIRAJA.HE IS ONE OF THE REASON FOR KAMAL HASSAN TO SUCCEED IN CINEMA.EVEN KAMAL HAVE NOT REACTED, WHY SHOULD YOU GUYS? RANDIE PLEASE DON’T SPECULATE.

Siva, We all know that Barathiraja has played a pivotal role in Kamal’s career. But blanket criticism of Dasavathaaram is unfair as far as i am concerened. There are so many good points you can speak of in Dasa.As Randie points out I suspect another reason for Barathiraja’s outburst.

Guys, chill. There is no need for everyone to be politically correct. If Bharatiraja thinks Dasavatharam is a bad movie, it’s his opinion. Haven’t you heard the saying ‘Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one’?

Moreover, Dasavatharam was meant to be an entertainer. Kamal himself has admitted that it does not have a great story. So, there is no need to get worked up whenever someone points his fingers at Kamal.

Bharatiraja has waxed eloquent on numerous occasions about Kamal’s acting skills. So,it’s not that he does not like Kamal or something. In my opinion, a true Kamal fan will not say that Dasavatharam is his best effort - both in terms of acting and script writing. We’ve had some wonderful films in the past. And we will have many in the future. This is just a mass, commercial entertainer. Let’s just leave it at that.

  7. randramble says:

Krishnan, Siva: it’s all good to see the positive side of things. Bharathiraja just didn’t stop with “Dasavathaaram has no story”; he made other unwarranted comments. It’s not a question of being politically correct; it’s destructive criticism.

  8. RajK says:

I agree with randramble. It’s not about his opinion, but his unwarranted comments.

There are many magic-like phenomenons in the universe as butterfly effect (I just wrote an article about “Emergence” in my blog; another related magic-like phenomenon; http://theory-of-theory.blogspot.com/2008/08/emergence.html).

A layman may consider these as magic or divine. But you can’t say these phenomenons as illogical, because they do exist in our everyday life. Bharatiraja’s comment is logically illogical.

What a BULTY by BarathyRaja ! Already He told those anti views against DASA. But now he is saying that he didn’t talk like that. it’s a SHAME.

BHARATHIRAJA IS ONE OF THE MASTER WHO CREATED THE ACTOR KNOWN AS KAMAL HASSAN TODAY.IF HE THINKS DASA IS LOUSY THAT’S HIS OPINION. ALL KAMAL FANS ARE HAPPY WITH DASA’S STORY AND IT’S BOX OFFICE PERFORMANCE. KNOWINGLY OR UNKNOWINGLY KAMAL HAS STARTED A NEW ERA IN TAMIL CINEMA WITH DASA. IF BHARATHIRAJA DOESN’T LIKE IT THAT’S HIS PROBLEM. PLEASE GIVE SOME RESPECT TO THE MASTER.

In latest AANANTHA VIKATAN (5 questions page) (AINTHU KELVIGAL paguthiyil oru kelvi) a question asked to him “whether he said any ill comments about Dasavatharam?”

Bharathi raja replies ” No. During my speech at a fuction i just said ‘Todays tamil and malayalam movies are not story oriented. But Press people linked my speech with Dasavatharam. KAMAL HAASAN IS THE REAL UNIVERSAL HERO. DASAVATHARAM IS A MILESTONE. I WAS STUNNED AND WONDERED SEEING DASAVATHARAM.HATS OFF TO KAMAL HAASAN AND KSR”

    AANDAVAR KAMAL HAASAN RULES………

Hahahaha… Well Said! Top notch. I agree. Though Dasavathaaram is a beautiful entertainer, it no way comes near to anbe sivam. But I guess they are two things apart.
